STUART McALLISTERBEFORE I VANISH
Before I Vanish · Chapter 01

The Shapeof Disappearing

A blurred woman bends forward, her face and body dissolving into a black background.
Presence / Absence

The photograph exists while you are looking at it.

The Shape of Disappearing is about the fragile distance between presence and absence. These photographs are less concerned with what has gone than with the moment in which something begins to leave — a figure slipping into darkness, a road continuing beyond sight, a room emptied of its occupants, a memory losing its edges.

The photographs are not records of disappearance so much as traces of it: evidence that something was once here.
